The Apostle John is discussing “mens rea” or the intent of the mind and differentiating between those born of God through the Spirit and those who serve Satan in rebellion to God’s will. The “new nature” in the redeemed of God seeks righteousness and even though sinlessness is the intent, perfection is unachievable due to the encumbrance of the sin-nature (Romans 7).

Those born of God are NOT absent sin as they remain encumbered with a sin-nature that is inextricably linked with the flesh though the redeemed in Messiah do possess a new nature (2 Corinthians 5:17) that abhors sin and strives to walk in obedience in the Spirit via the process of sanctification. It is this change of attitude toward sin that is indicative of the Spirit’s presence in one’s life. Anyone who says they do not sin either by word, thought or deed is a liar and the truth is not in them (Romans 3:23). God the Father is aware of our sin and its causation and He also knows our thoughts and our desires and our intentions and He “chooses” via His divine will to not see our sin but only the righteousness and perfection of His dear Son via the imputation when we believe with a sincere heart that Jesus is our Lord who died to pay our sin-debt, a debt we could not pay through human effort (Hebrews 8:12; John 3:16-18).

“7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.…” 1 John 1:7-9

Though redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ, the redeemed in Christ do struggle with a sin-nature that wars against the NEW NATURE provided by the indwelling Holy Spirit. The faithful in Christ confess their sin to the Father not to reestablish their salvation which is secure forever through the indwelling Holy Spirit as our Guarantor of the Covenant of Grace (Ephesians 1:13-14) but the redeemed seek forgiveness of sin to maintain intimacy with our God wherein lies the boundless beauty of peace and joy and contentment. The Law of sin and death is the Mosaic Law provided in Leviticus and reiterated in Deuteronomy as the Levitical Law only defined sin void atonement (Romans 3:20). The Law of Moses only condemned mankind to death in Hell as it mandated perfection (James 2:10; Romans 10:5; Leviticus 18:5) by a people (the totality of mankind) who are by nature sinners (Romans 3:23); therefore, the Law portrayed only hopelessness in and of itself while simultaneously pointing mankind to the One who would embody the Law, successfully fulfill it (Matthew 5:17) and thereby provide atonement and righteousness through the Cross via imputation by faith and subsequently reconciliation with the Father, a relationship through Covenant sealed and guaranteed by God the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:11; Romans 5:1; Ephesians 1:13-14).

Paul never taught anyone to “break” the moral Laws of God but Paul taught that mankind cannot achieve righteousness (a right standing) with the Father through attempts to keep a Law that only condemns void atonement (Romans 3:20) as all of mankind is under the condemnation of sin (Romans 3:23) and all have sinned and our best works seeking our own righteousness are as a filthy menstrual cloth in the nose of our God (Isaiah 64:6); therefore, in order to attain righteousness through the Law one must obey the Law in absolute perfection (Romans 10:5; Leviticus 18:5); otherwise, to violate one jot or one tittle of the Law is to be guilty of violating the whole Law (James 2:10); therefore, this begs the question, what can mankind do to avoid the wrath of God concerning sin and death in Hell?

God the Father, in His compassion and love, sent forth the Son into Time approximately 2000-years ago born of a virgin woman (Genesis 3:15; Matthew 1:26) thereby circumventing the sin-nature of our father Adam (Romans 5:12-21)…this permitted Jesus via the hypostatic union of God and man (Philippians 2:8) to obey the Law in absolute perfection (Matthew 5:17; John 8:46) thereby becoming our ONLY available blood atonement for sin (Hebrews 10; John 14:6; Matthew 26:28); the Father put your sin, my sin, upon His Son who suffered and died in your place and Jesus did the “work” of righteousness for you and by believing in Jesus as your God and Mediator for sin (John 3:16-18; Romans 10:9-10), you can have Jesus’ perfection, His righteousness, imputed-infused into and over your life (Romans 4:5-11) and the Father via the Covenant of Grace promises to forgive your sin, to not see your sin and declare you “not guilty” and the Father will seal this Covenant by giving you His Holy Spirit to indwell you forever and secure you in His LOVE and forgiveness for eternity as He walks you daily in His will, His obedience via the process of sanctification as His Law is now written upon your heart and infused within your mind via the Spirit (2 Corinthians 5:21; Ephesians 1:13-14; Galatians 5:16; Hebrews 8:10; 10:16).

What the Law could not do as it is weakened by the sinful flesh and the sin-nature and the Law is void atonement for sin, God the Father did by putting our sin upon His sinless-Holy Son and the Son paid the price, kept the Law, did the work, for you, for me, and you and I can access the eternal benefits of the Son’s sacrifice for us by “believing” in Him as our Lord who died to pay our sin-debt…a debt the Law could not atone for and a debt we could not pay through our own human effort (Romans 8:3).

Without the shedding of blood there is NO atonement for sin (Hebrews 9:22; Leviticus 17:11). The Law provides you ZERO-atonement, ZERO-remission of sin; therefore, if you trust in the Law for righteousness, you will die in your sin (Galatians 2:16; John 14:6; John 8:24; Galatians 2:21) and you will die the “second death” in Hell.

Concerning the “law keepers” rejection of an eternal spirit…
