  1. Rick, I’m in awe of what you’ve taken on regarding the MC noise problem. I’m with you totally, and happy to have found your FB page. However, I don’t have a FB acct and don’t intend to sign up for one, therefore I’m unable to “like” or post comments. Any options to a FB acct? I do have a G+ acct. Anyway, I’ll continue to read your daily posts and suggest others to do the same. Heartfelt hanks for what you’re doing to tackle this pernicious problem.

  2. Rick, thanks for your reply. Have you considered a legal solution such as a class action against after market providers of an illegal product? Otherwise, I’m a proponent of the public health tact. We banned smoking in public buildings a number of years ago. That health issue is heavily enforced where I live. Where is the tipping point re: environmental noise? Kills people in a similar way…heart disease et al. Keep up the good work!

    1. Hello Thomas, I’ve done everything but beg the attorneys in Arkansas to represent me, or a class action suit, against the aftermarket exhaust industry. No takers yet. Not sure what I’m going to have to do get some serious attention, perhaps a hunger strike on the Arkansas Capitol Steps?…yes, this battle does mirror the battle with “big tobacco” in many ways. A couple of “wins” here and there and the entire NOISE debacle would begin to erode…just need traction! Thanks Thomas, Rick

  3. Actually, it’s the Loud Biker Cult[ure] who should consider moving to a Socialist or Communist country seeing that they have succumbed to an ideology of Moral Relativism thus lacking moral and ethical structure – those behavioral attributes necessary for a strong and resilient Representative Democracy.

The United States is a Nation founded on the rule of law – and our Democracy cannot be sustained void an overwhelming number of the citizenry adhering to the venerable civil-reciprocal contract existing between the Government and the citizenry. It is the citizenry that must internalize the truism that behavior has consequences and each member of society is responsible for seeking peace, striving to do no harm, endeavoring to adhere to the edicts of the Sovereign and faithfully paying their taxes; in return, the State/Government provides the citizen with protection – protection being the first responsibility of Government.

Your perspective is wholly incorrect because it is based on a faulty premise. You suggest that it is I who should protect myself from the selfishness and irresponsibility of others when there are well-established laws protecting me and the citizens of the United States from that illegal behavior. It is the members of the Loud Biker Cult[ure] who are responsible for violating the protective intent of the well-established, Constitutionally valid, laws and they are therefore guilty of violating the civil-reciprocal contract and are therefore truly the UN-American faction in your faulty scenario. With that said, it is the Loud Biker Cult[ure] who should seek another form of government in order to pursue their ideological perspective of Moral Relativism i.e. hedonism, narcissism, debauchery, selfishness – because this destructive ideology undermines the very tenets of our Representative Democracy.

  4. Rick,
I stumbled across your web pages tonight and thought I would leave a comment. I am a 48 year old male, and lifetime motorcycle rider like you. I am also avidly against loud vehicles, motorcycles included and at the top of the list. Your observations seem spot on about the narcissistic culture and it’s disregard for society and fellow human beings.

As a rider of both street and off road motorcycles, I am particularly bothered by other riders that create a negative image and association with a passion and pastime I’ve loved for my entire life. As a hobby motorcycle collector my bikes are older, unique/rare, and above all quite. That last item, quite, is not easy to achieve and in many cases as I’ve had to track down OEM exhaust systems from all over the world and pay outrageous shipping costs. Why, because I can’t buy quite aftermarket exhaust systems. The aftermarket industry simply doesn’t make them.

So, back to the point of my comment. Your blogs talks about the problem, but I don’t see the suggestions for a solution. The police in general don’t do anything about the excessive noise, or at least don’t seem to care, and the problem is getting worse.

What do you suggest? What can us common folk do about the problem? What can us uncommon motorcyclists do about the problem? I don’t think the passive aggressive comments to our next door neighbor with the loud bike is going to make a change. Maybe a national bumper sticker campaign is needed, similar to the “motorcycles are everywhere” campaign, but this one sending a message to stop the noise?

You have outlined the problem, what do you see as the solution?
    Sincerely
    Paul Berardis

    1. Hello Paul, thank you for your thoughtful comment. Under the solutions subheading in the Article, my only viable option is “The American Quality of Life Act – 2017.” see: https://view.publitas.com/p222-12679/american-quality-of-life-act-2017-congressional-bill-proposal/ After many years of seeking Federal, State and Local intervention for the pervasive illegal motor vehicle NOISE problem in the United States, I presented this Federal Motor Vehicle Muffler Mandate on Capitol Hill in May/2017…no response from the Representatives or their designee at this time.

      Thanks Paul

      1. I have downloaded and printed the American Quality of Life Act – 2017. I have been looking for a solution to this problem for several years. The noise that comes from the vehicles these days is horrendous. I can hear some cars/trucks going down the highway for miles while sitting in my house. It has gotten out of hand.
I plan on sending the proposal to my state rep. Maybe if we all did it it might help.

  5. I hate so very much loud motorcycles. And how many motorcyclists think it okay to do illegal things to their exhausts, then insist they’re doing nothing wrong. I love people who work to make the world a quieter place. I used to own a little Honda 250, so I’m not against motorcycles – just against the jerks who think assaulting our ears is okay to do.

  7. I like your article on loud motorcycles. Every day motorcycles cause me pain as I have a rare back condition where vibrations cause intense pain. This is an assault on me from motorcycles. It is like they are personally torturing me. It is awful.

    1. Thank you for the comment; unfortunately, as long as our law enforcement community compromises their professional ethics and oath by riding illegally loud and neglecting to enforce our muffler laws, the illegally equipped, illegally loud motor vehicles on our roadways will only increase in numbers in a society that pursues narcissism while disrespecting their fellowman.

      1. Read the article brainchild… Both the Federal and 49-State laws prohibit the modification of a muffler used on public roadways. The Federal law limits a street production motorcycle, 1986-year model forward, to a “total” motorcycle noise emissions of 80 DbA. You have no right to violate the rights of the American citizen to enjoy life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, to enjoy domestic tranquility as that pertains to one’s home, work, place of worship. It is the narcissist, the bully thug, that modifies a motorcycle, auto, truck, and proceeds out onto a public roadway and abuses America’s most innocent with illegal noise emissions. I am a Marine and Police Officer who took an oath to protect, to serve, to uphold the Constitution and if you advocate for narcissistic, bully thugs on loud motorcycles in our communities, you are a thug, a disrespectful narcissist and if our police were not as useless as the titties on a boar hog…you should be incarcerated and that noisy piece of junk impounded until you return it to OEM, legal, condition. Have a nice day.

  8. you don’t deserve the moniker of Marine. You are advocating for the restriction of other freedom when they are doing no objective harm to the public. We are also preserving our own lives. Quit advocating for a nanny state, it’s antithesis to the constitution you took an oath to defend, that you now spit on. I’m sure you have some objective pompous response that you are fighting the “good fight”, when in reality you are the literal embodiment of everything the foundation on America was built to avoid. You never deserved to put an EGA on your chest.

  9. What’s the difference between a vacuum cleaner and a loud Harley Davidson?
The vacuum cleaner dirt bag rides on the side.
Thanks to all the inconsiderate, vile, obnoxious dirt bags that are so desperately in need of attention because they don’t have ‘equipment’ that measures up and so they think modifying their stupid POS motorcycle to sound like a brontosaurus farting at 100+ decibels.. I have decided to leave the country. Yep. I’m moving to Costa Rica. I’m going to hear the sound of rain, wildlife, my own thoughts, and other things that every human being has the right to listen to. The law says you can’t be a rude, noisy loserbag, but the cops don’t want to be bothered. So I’m done paying my taxes in the US of noisy A. Done, done, done. And there’s a special place in Hell for all you a-holes who have destroyed the quality of life nationwide. You can spend eternity listening to “Disco Duck” and “Who Let the Dogs Out” and fingernails scraping on chalkboards and jumbo jets landing five feet away and car alarms and Tasmanian devils screeching (maybe some chimps screeching as well) until your ears bleed out and then you can keep listening to those sounds ricochet inside your stupid empty skulls.
That’s me being nice and polite. You don’t really want to know what I think of you or what sort of things I imaging happening to you.
Go F— Yourselves and stick your loud motorcycle pipes up you asses and get a life. You are not the only life forms on the planet. You don’t deserve to be called life forms. You suck. I’ll be giving you the middle finger from the jungle, you obnoxious losers.
    Have a wonderful day 😀

  10. Well done Rick, even though there are thousands whose comments might not end up here, they are all behind you.

    a) I don’t and have never had ANYTHING against bike riders or bikes, of any stripe and
    b) my ONLY bitch with them is the noise thing they ( think they) need.

Bikers who have to say everything through their Vance & Hines pipes must be too goddamn stupid to be able to say anything without them. Who are you trying to impress, your girlfriend? The whole “freedom ain’t quiet” thing is the biggest crock of shit, it’s a marketing thing for people that have no other identity and the fact that the H-D president himself came out against bike noise should say something. In a heavily-biker town I used to live in near the San Fernando valley that I saw, not once but twice in the space of a couple years, totally tricked out Harley/riders with DEAD QUIET pipes. I mean I could hear my stock car muffler over these guys. And they looked badass enough to fit in any biker rally. So what gives?

I don’t know why common united citizens, like those on Signal Hill, are so pussy about doing what’s necessary. Are they really that willing to be tortured and made fools forever by their so-called law enforcement? THAT ain’t “freedom”. Bikers with straightpipes have declared war, law enforcement & and DA’s have surrendered their position, so that means they’re leaving up to us, right? Just like in that place called America? The rest of us need to declare war back. Has to start at the local level, with people who’ve really had enough. I haven’t quite yet, but I’m very close. This is America after all, and “I only live once”, the bikers said so. They can (they think) do what they want, so we can do what we want. And we can hear them coming half a mile off so…a little imagination does the trick.

  11. Rick, I am a police officer who shares your enthusiasm for this topic. Although your passion seems to be regarding motorcycle noise enforcement, I have the desire to enforce the muffler laws on all vehicles. I have run into some issues while trying to testify regarding the Minnesota law in court. Is there a way that I can communicate with you over a private forum: phone or email so that I can pick your brain a little bit. Thanks.

  13. Mind blowing that someone who fought for freedom has such a hard on for stripping people of freedom because it “bothers them”. “Noise assault” is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life, and it takes an absolute Karen to be so obsessed with what other people do with the vehicles THEY pay for. There is a such thing as exhaust that is to loud, but to restrict vehicles from all modifications regarding exhaust is ignorant, and a violation of individual’s freedoms. The reason no one wants to help you with your cause is because for every one of you bored whine bags, there’s 50 people with a passion for modified vehicles. Most elderly people couldn’t care less, and most children think loud vehicles are exciting. You had your time in Houston to stomp all over freedoms that rarely, if EVER cause actual harm. Get a life and worry about yourself instead of crying assault over something that annoys you. One Cheeto fingered basement dweller behind a screen isn’t going to take on a multi billion dollar industry (aftermarket automotive sales and service). The EPA has a hard enough time, with things like the RPM act to keep those snakes at bay.
